Chapter 11

Rayna

I woke to the sound of buzzing by my head. Oh, I despised bugs, whether they were on Earth or any other planet. I swatted around my face furiously and wound up smacking a face. Not my face.

“Ow,” muttered Ledos, turning away from me. “What was that for?”

“Sorry.” I sat up, stretching. “It wasn’t for you. It was for the bugs.”

“They haven’t bitten,” he said, looking at my exposed neck and face. “I think they’re harmless.”

“I hope you’re right,” I said. “I’ve encountered enough that have turned out to be quite dangerous.” I got up, needing to relieve myself and also feeling intensely parched. I looked at the charred remains of our little campfire. It had burned down and gone out over the night. Only some black ashes and the floral smell remained, which seemed to be the result of the type of wood. I went back to the little cluster of shrubs that I had used the last time I needed to relieve myself…a few moments away from Ledos to reflect.

We had kissed again last night. I had kissed him. He’d been the one to break it off, and that was a good thing. I had been about to get more adventurous with my touching. I was curious what Ledos had going on under those tight pants of his. If he hadn’t stopped us, I don’t know if I would have.

It was reckless, and very much not like me. But out here, in the middle of nowhere and away from everything safe, I wasn’t the me I’d been for a long time. And Ledos was…my partner.

I returned to the small shelter to see him cleaning up the remains of our dinner. There was still some food remaining. We had eaten everything that would not keep, but there was not much left.

“I think we can reach the base of the waterfall today,” he declared. “It’s not that far, and we can build a shelter there. I can hunt.”

That was fine with me. I didn’t want to admit how thirsty I was. It reminded me of my time on the Brakken transport, trapped and fed only the foul scraps they tossed me, and an occasional waterskin filled with rank water.

I nodded, realizing I’d begun rubbing my hands, as if washing them. I froze, then pressed my hands to my thighs to keep them from trying to wash themselves.

If Ledos noticed, he said nothing. He slung his bag back over his shoulder, carried his bow in one hand and reached for me with the other. “Ready?”

I put my hand in his and we began to walk again.

With his help, we did indeed make it to the base of the mountain waterfall. We spoke little that day as we tracked through the difficult terrain. The vegetation had grown thicker. There was no path, obviously. We walked straight towards the mountain, which loomed before us. Ledos had me climb onto his back at the more vertical stretches, while he nimbly crossed the rock faces, difficult slopes, and jutting boulders, all slick with moss and moisture.
